      I backed into somebody the other day and I said sorry because there was no damage, but it was a calculated risk to lower their anger weighed against "is he going to sue me and say I said sorry?" The de-escalation worked and we shook hands and wished each other a good day.

    But "sorry" as a legal admission of guilt sucks. I just wanted to be a decent human being and I had to gauge whether that was going to cost me money to just be nice to another person who I had accidentally wronged and that's clearly the wrong social incentive.
