If I stop Rails I get back most of the performance, but it's still perceptibly sluggish.

I am reminded - against my will - of this thread: rockerest/1488688217184481280 JavaScript developers seem to love to shoot themselves in the feet over and over without ever learning the lesson, which is that the closer you stick to browser standards, the better your life will be.
