stuartfiddle If it smells like a "dirt" or linty burning smell it's probably just a very, very dirty cabin air filter getting super hot. If it smells kinda sickly sweet but still like burning, you should check your exhaust. If your exhaust is thick white, you have a serious coolant leak.

stuartfiddle The former is cheap to fix. The latter is not. In *any* case, even if it's neither of these, you should absolutely have someone check it out very thoroughly, because any potential source of fire is not something to toy with.

stuartfiddle For the record old oil would not cause a burning smell. Unless it's like... YEARS over your due date, in which case your engine is about to seize and there is *nothing* you can do other than change it and hope for the best. It is probably not that.

stuartfiddle HOWEVER, an oil leak into your cylinders could cause a burning smell. Also not cheap to fix. When you get your oil changed, ask them to confirm that you don't have any leaks / check the amount of oil they drain. If you're burning oil you'll be really low.
