                  1. I just finished The Surge - a game I tried to refund after giving it a college try and it intentionally fucking me over and over; Steam refused my refund, so I basically 100%ed it out of spite - and I have HIGHLY mixed feelings. 1/🧵

The story could be good (if bland and unoriginal) if it wasn't somehow simultaneously hamfisted and also backgrounded into oblivion. 2/🧵

The game introduces some INTENSELY good ideas in combat and it feels awesome... Except when they mercilessly kill you because your combo animation isn't interruptible and your character finishes the combo by - say - stepping off one of the many walkways into oblivion. 3/🧵

The level design is clever, but they're a bunch of pretty good (at best) levels with a labyrinth of identical maintenance shafts connecting them in which you'll spend most of your time. There is no map. There is nothing. Just one identical maintenance shaft after another. 4/🧵

The enemies are brutally punishing. Snuck up behind that robot? Haha no. It heard you swing your weapon and instantly gets a one-shot off - behind it - killing you. You can learn the movesets within 10 seconds. The problem is that if you miss the timing by more than 3-5 5/🧵

MILLISECONDS, the enemy will hit you with a stun attack and then hit you for 150 damage that you cannot block or escape over the next 3 seconds. Did I mention you don't get health increases throughout the game? You get 100 health, that's it. 6/🧵

Sure, the upgrade system ("implants") allows you to boost your health, but it's always at the cost of the rest of the game: "Do I want to survive this level, or have fun in combat?" 7/🧵

The only way I found to clear a level reliably was to grind for HOURS in one area to get myself levelled way beyond the area, and then just sweep through and mop everything up. This is not good game design. It's not fun, and it reeks of "oh no the game is too short." 8/🧵

The frustrating part is that the game FEELS rewarding. It has all the marks of the dopamine drip modern games have. I get unlocks, and upgrades, and multipliers and when I defeat a boss (a horrible job that is all stress and no fun) I get new weapons and gear. 9/🧵

I literally exclaimed out loud multiple times when I defeated an enemy, but it wasn't because I learned a special move set or picked the right combo of skills and weapons... I just loaded up on health boosts and smacked them until they died, before I did. Ugh. 10/🧵

The Surge is a simulacrum of a fun game, and I wish it was an actual one. It has so much cool stuff to offer to the industry and the genre but it just booked everything so badly. Maybe The Surge 2 fixed everything, but I'm so burned out I don't care to check. End/🧵

*borked. It borked everything so badly. Autocorrect is rarely correct.

12/11 🧵 I gotta shout out BlueLizardJello for his incredible walkthrough on Youtube: youtube.com/playlist?list=PLcdPu6JrcV8RVuaGrzuCEOrs7x_uE5r9h In my opinion, this game is virtually unplayable without something like this and - insofar as one can have a gaming debt - I am forever in debt to him for his videos.

13/11 🧵 If you watch any of those videos, you'll find that he disagrees strongly with my take of the game, and his positivity and joy with the game is - in no uncertain terms - a huge part of what kept me going for [checks notes] 66.1 hours.
